After winning the competition for the Tianjin Grand Theatre, GMP was able to win another competition in Tianjin, China, in 2013.This time, they were dealing with designing a convention and exhibition centre. While the Chinese metropolises Shanghai and Guangzhou already have such a centre, Tianjin is meant to follow within the next years.
Chinese Superlatives
And of course, superlatives are a must: on an area of altogether 1,2 million square metres, a mere exhibition area of 400.000 m² shall be created. (for comparison only: the Messe München in Munich has an exhibition area of 180.000 m²)The future exhibition grounds stretch between Tianjin Avenue and the Haihe River. Thus, it connects an important transport axis of the region with an important waterway. The Tianjin Avenue in turn links the historical city centre of Tianjin with the development area of Binhai at the Yellow Sea.
Two are better than One
Besides the exhibition halls and the exhibition areas in the outdoor area, the exhibition grounds will comprise a congress centre, several hotels, and various office and administration areas. The building project shall be designed as two segments. But both parts are almost identical.
There is an entrance hall each and a main axis running from it. On each side of those two axes, there are four exhibition halls.
The draft by GMP does not show much of the architecture of the 12.500 m² large exhibition halls. Only the entrance halls have been worked out in detail. Those are steel and glass buildings with prominent roofs in the shape of filigree umbrella constructions. The roofs of the exhibition halls are simple saw-tooth roof constructions.

The draft by GMP does not display very much. But one thing is for sure: another gigantic exhibition centre will emerge in China. The planned exhibition area of 400.000 m² allows conclusions to be drawn about the amount of people, objects, and vehicles to be expected.
