Shizimen-Bridge

The design of the Shizimen Bridge has the shape of an infinite loop and turns out to be a highly efficient construction.

In Zhuhai, China, the new business district Shizimen is emerging at the moment, which is separated from the existing quarter by the Pearl River Delta. To access the new district, a competition at international level for building a bridge had been organized, which was won by the team of 10 DESIGN and Buro Happold. 16 offices had taken part in the competition, including internationally renowned architects and engineers like Aedas, ARUP, and Woods Bagot. Besides the Shizimen Bridge, the team also made the second and third place for building two out of four further bridges in the region.

Landmark for the new district

The architects opted for a simple and, yet, expressive shape: an infinite loop of steel. The design convinced as a visual landmark for the new business district and the coastal region along the Pearl River. In the water, the bridge is reflected as an eight lying on its side – a symbol of prosperity in Chinese culture.

Continuous steel strip

Because of the shape of a loop, the span could be split into two units, both held by bearer cables. Those bear the tensile forces, while the arches absorb the pressure.

The primary structure spans 200 metres and runs in an arch over the roadway and pedestrian area. At the highest point, the arch reaches a height of 100 metres, and touches at the lowest point the water, where the Shizimen Canal and the Pearl River Delta run together.

The Shizimen Bridge is the largest of the five planned bridges.

One of my most desired bridge design to work on. This loop is kind a hard to construct and needs a lot of time to be able to get the right measure and to finish for the design itself.
